A group of 28 students in charge of eco-tourism, called 'Green Volunteers' of Hue city, have guided visitors in original tours to help them have sudden, attractive and interesting discoveries about this ancient city.
This group belongs to 'the education project to improve the community's awareness on the environment’ of Thua Thien Hue Province, with the cooperation and support of the Region Nord-Pas-De-Calais (the Republic of France).
The tours depart from the very impressive Thien Dang Wharf (Paradise wharf) on the poetic Huong riverside at 5a.m and 3p.m daily. The visitors can choose their mode of transportation depending on the tour. There will be three modes of transportation: bicycle, boat and pedicab, which bring visitors to the center of the city.
Visitors will get familiar with the Ngu Ha Canal, Tinh Tam Lake, and Lan Garden. Departing from Thien Dang Wharf, the boats will bring visitors down to Dong Ba Market and enter the Ngu Ha Canal. The boat will land at Le Van Huu Street, so that visitors can have a walk in the shade of bamboo trees and contemplate the traditional rows of Chinese tea bushes of a typical Hue garden house. After being introduced to the Tinh Tam Lake and the Ngu Ha Canal, visitors will be brought to vegetable gardens, which have been planted on ramparts north of the Citadel. It is a tranquil residence and the people here are very gentle and industrious in the cultivation of their small gardens, which supply vegetables for the entire city. Visitors will be very surprised and interested to know that there still exists a traditional mode of cultivation right in the center of the city. Vegetable irrigating water is brought from wells, not by a pumping machine, but rather by foot-driven reel.
Stopping by Lan Garden, near An Hoa Gate, and looking at some beds of green vegetables, you seem to forget the noise and animation of urban life outside the Citadel and instead are transported to the time of farmers in an ancient and tranquil city. They do not scramble for anything, yet only wish to bring vegetables for the people's daily meals. Following the visiting tour to Phung (Phoenix) Garden, visitors will go by pedicab. If they choose the tour to the Dragon or Tortoise Garden, they will go by bicycle. The system of rivers, lakes and gardens pervaded with green and the peaceful life of the residents of the four wards of the Citadel has given visitors wonderful and relaxed moments without dullness. This feeling of ease is partly due to the joyful embellishment created by the artists of the Le Phun troupe.
Upon coming to Hue, you can not only visit the magnificent and splendid Citadel and Royal Tombs or listen to Hue folk songs, but also you will discover the youth of Hue City, an original and poetic world of green.
