The Ho Chi Minh City Tourist Department said the southern mecca enjoyed a surge of 83% year on year with the number of tourists at 140,000 in July, a month considered low season for the city’s hospitality industry.
This is the first time, the Guide Awards were conferred on intangible cultural heritage sites, such as Hoi An Ancient town night, Bac Ninh's folksongs, Ha Tay's water puppetry, Hanoi's Tru singing, Chau Van Nam Dinh, Hue's music, Dak Lak's Gong, Dan ca tai tu Nam Bo, Quang Nam’s bai choi, and Cham dances from Ninh Thuan Province.
It is also the first time that the prizes were presented awards to three individuals for their achievements in the development of Vietnam’s tourism. They were Nguyen Su, Deputy Secretary of the Hoi An Town Party Committee, Paul Stoll, Director of the Furama Resort, and Vo Van Quan, Director of Director of the XQ embroidered painting company.
The awards for 2004 included 122 prizes and campaign medals bestowed upon tourism firms, hotels, resorts, restaurants, entertainment sites, beauty salons, golf courses, and transport services.
The annual Guide Awards honour tourist and services companies which have successfully combined intangible cultural heritage sites with tourism promotion.
