The ethnic Khmer minority community's happiness on Chol Chnam Thmay, their traditional New Year festival, was increased by the Government with its distribution of Khmer Buddhist Sutras.
The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha handed over 13,000 copies of Khmer Buddhist Sutras to monks and nuns from 14 provinces and cities in southern Vietnam at a ceremony held in the Mekong Delta province of Can Tho on April 10. Most Venerable Danh Nhuong, Deputy President of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, was among those present at the event.
The Sutra copies were printed in Pali, the language of the Khmer people. The next delivery of 12,000 copies is scheduled for this coming July. The combined cost of the two batches are estimated at more than 300 million VND.
The Khmer Buddhist Sect in Southern Vietnam now boasts some 500 pagodas which house almost 10,000 monks and nuns.
In Soc Trang province, local authorities held a meeting on April 11 with over 200 monks and nuns, mothers of fallen soldiers and a number of public employees who have set bright examples among the ethnic Khmer group on the occasion of the Chol Chnam Thmay festival.
Local leaders pledged to improve the living conditions for the Khmer community as they did last year.
