As part of the Sea Festival taking place in the south sea city Vung Tau in April, a ‘Sand Festival’ will be open for sculptors.
According to Nguyen Quoc Chuong, Director of Vung Tau Tourist Centre, Head organiser of the festival, it will be the biggest sand festival held in Vietnam so far. It will include a sculpture competition. It also will be a game for tourists, taking place from April 6 to 10. All tourists can register at the event.
As Mr Chuong said, the festival already attracted students from four universities in Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau, and members of a fine art club.
The topics for the sculpture competition will include history and the environment. Students from HCM City’s Hong Bang Univeristy will make a 6m high statue of Lac Long Quan, using 100 cu m sand and 30 workers. HCM Fine Art University will make a statue of hero Vo Thi Sau, with 50 cu m sand; HCM City’s Van Lang will make a 12m long, 2 m high whale with 80 cu m sand.
In particular, Vung Tau’s Fine Art Club will make a model of an international ancient city, including international wonders such as pyramids.
Previously, a sand festival was also held in Vung Tau city. That time, Hong Bang’s students made a statue of ancient citadel Co Loa’s turtle, using over 50cu m sand. Organisers expect the experience will be helpful for this big festival.
Visitors who want to joint the event can register at 12B2 Ngoc Tuoc Hill, Thang Tam Commune, Vung Tau City. Tel: (064).523678. Awards from the competition will include VND7mil (US$437), VND5mil (US$312), VND3mil (US$185) and VND1mil (US$62).
