Bien Ho (Sea Lake), about eight kilometres north of Pleiku city, the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, is likened as a pearl due to its spectacular and charming scenery.
The huge Bien Ho is the flooded crater of an ancient volcano has remained inactive for millions of years. The lake is about 250 hectares wide and 20 metres deep.
Legend has it that the lake was formed by the tears of To Nung villagers who cried for their relatives who had been buried by the volcano.
Although it’s an attractive location, it warrants only a brief visit because there’s not much else to do apart from looking at the view. You might pause a little while to wonder why the water level hardly varies at all, despite the prolonged desiccating droughts that reduce the plateau to a dustbowl each spring.
It looks like a tortoise swimming when viewing from a high position. Standing on the tortoise head tower, tourists can expand their view to jungles, rolling pine hills and particularly a suspension bridge.
Those who want to have a good view of scenery can take a motorbike taxi to travel around the lake.
