Vietnam has discovered no cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) since mid-2003 when the epidemic was contained in the country, said a senior health official.
There are no reported SARS patients in the country, asserted Deputy Health Minister Tran Chi Liem at an April 13 meeting of the steering committee for preventing viruses caused by respiratory diseases in Hanoi.
Also, the H5N1 bird flu disease in poultry and humans has been waning, said Mr. Liem.
Until now, Tra Vinh province in the Mekong Delta region is the only locality in Vietnam that has not announced the end to bird flu outbreaks.
No human-to-human transmission
There are no signs of human-to-human transmission of the bird flu in Vietnam, said health officials.
However, the ministry has worked out an action plan worth 80 billion VND to strengthen preventive measures to control the bird flu.
Health officials have emphasized the importance of cooperation among agencies as a major measure to prevent the risk of human-to-human transmission.
